Summary of the post

 Working under appropriate supervision: assist in providing specialist expertise to offer women choices in labour, which are safe and evidence based. Assess the full range of care needs, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care throughout the antenatal, intra-partum and postnatal period for women and their babies. Work as an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team providing care to women throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum continuum.

Key responsibilities

  • Be involved in the development of specialised evidence based programmes of care for the majority of women and birthing people throughout pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period, working alongside the qualified midwife without referral to medical staff, adhering to agreed local and national clinical policies and code of practice
  • Assist in providing specialist advice to women & families in relation to pregnancy, labour and postnatal period, utilising interpersonal skills
  • Assist in providing specialist advice on infant feeding
  • Support women through the experience of childbirth, assisting women through unpredictable events during the course of labour
  • Perform normal delivery of babies and develop extended skills e.g. episiotomy, perineal suturing, IV cannulation, vaginal examination
  • Be involved in dealing with emergency situations that occur which can be life threatening
  • Be involved in the arrangement for appropriate investigations to be undertaken, interpret and act on these accordingly
  • Competently care for high risk and high dependency cases under direct supervision
  • Be involved in competently interpreting CTG tracing, referring to more experienced staff where appropriate
  • Undertake initial examination of the newborn under supervision
  • Be involved in the initiation of neonatal resuscitation, referring appropriately when necessary
  • Provide telephone advice regarding antenatal, postnatal, pregnancy issues under supervision where required
  • Be involved in the identification and address social problems e.g. safeguarding issues, domestic violence, drug addiction and be involved in seeking appropriate referral
  • Attend theatre for caesarean sections and assist appropriately
  • Develop competence at the immediate recovery of postoperative women
  • Provide pre and post-operative care as required under supervision as required
  • Assist registrars in performing examinations e.g. fetal blood sampling, instrumental delivery
  • Be involved in the safe administration of medicines in accordance with NMC guidelines and stage of training
  • Act as an advocate for woman at all times
  • Act in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct (NMC)
  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of children at an individual level
  • Participate in emergency skill drills to familiarise with the prompt action/treatment required in emergency situations
  • Comply with infection control procedures at all times
  • Take personal responsibility for putting the person receiving care first, and to challenge poor care, doing so as soon as any shortcomings are seen

 

Person specification

  • Applicants will hold a first degree (honours) recognised in the UK with a classification of 2.2 or above
  • The University will consider applications on an individual basis if applicants hold an Ordinary degree in Nursing/Advanced Diploma in Nursing Studies
  • Applicants must hold three GCSE’s or equivalent at grade 4/C or above, in mathematics, English language or literature and a science subject
  • Evidence of recent study (within the last ten years)
  • This course is open to Adult Nurses registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) with evidence of at least 12 months experience working as an adult nurse in an appropriate setting
  • Experience of working in maternity services
  • Proactive member of a multidisciplinary team
