Location: Altnagelvin Area Hospital, Londonderry  

Contract and hours: Temporary / Full-time (40hpw / 10PA's) 

If permanent funding becomes available, the successful candidate will be offered the post on a permanent basis.

A waiting list may be established for the next 12 months should another similar post arise.

Job summary

The OMFS department is a busy unit providing a comprehensive OMFS service to the large geographical area of the WH&SCT, the northern sectors of the NHSCT and Co Donegal. There are 4 consultants in the speciality. Sub-specialities within the department are:

  • Surgical Dermatology of the H&N
  • Head and Neck oncology
  • Facial Deformity (Orthognathic surgery)
  • Oral Medicine
  • Dentoalveolar surgery

Operating takes place in the main theatre block in Altnagelvin Hospital, in a dedicated OMFS theatre. There is also access to day case theatre at Altnagelvin. There is access to the Intensive Care Unit and the High Dependency Unit.

Outpatient clinics are held in Altnagelvin Hospital, South West Acute Hospital, Causeway Hospital and Letterkenny Hospital.

Main responsibilities

  • General care of all patients in OMFS.
  • To assist at outpatient clinics and operating sessions.
  • If deemed competent, to carry out routine OMFS procedures independently.
  • The post holders will liaise with medical and dental colleagues, nurses, dental technicians and other staff providing the range of services within the Trust.
  • Where required undertake undergraduate and post-graduate teaching.
  • The post holders will be non-resident second on-call for emergencies and continuing care of the Department’s patients. The rota will normally be 1:5.
  • The post holders must undertake, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally roistered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
  • The post holder will be expected to be flexible and cooperate with reasonable requests to cover their colleagues’ absences where they are safe and competent and where it is practicable to do so.
  • The post holders must participate in regular audit. The post holders may be asked to supervise junior doctor’s audits.
  • Undertake regular resuscitation training and other statutory training sessions.
  • The post holders will participate in an annual appraisal process.
