Contract and Hours: Two permanent posts available, full-time (Altnagelvin Hospital, 40 hpw), and part-time (South West Acute Hospital, 24 hpw)

 

Job Summary

The WHSCT wishes to appoint a 1.6 WTE Consultant Psychiatrists to work in the newly developed Mental Health Liaison Service. The post holders will work within the multidisciplinary team to deliver an integrated mental health assessment and psychiatry liaison service for the adult population of 18–65-year-olds within the trust acute hospitals.

Whilst the consultants appointed to the liaison service will be required to provide expert assessment and advice to the team regarding all mental health presentations to the service. The appointed consultant will provide advice and supervision to the team, and it is envisaged that they will be involved in providing some teaching/training to the acute hospital staff.

 

Key Result Areas / Main Responsibilities:

The postholder will be expected to:

  • Provide psychiatric care to patients referred to the Western Health and Social Care Trust Mental Health Liaison Service.
  • Provide medical expertise within the Multidisciplinary Liaison Team
  • Work as part of the Multi-disciplinary Team, being available and accessible to provide support when appropriate.
  • Work in partnership with clinical colleagues and service managers and provide professional leadership including clinical supervision to the medical team and to provide clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary and multi-agency environment within the Trust.
  • Ensure effective liaison occurs between mental health services and acute hospital and also with other agencies in the voluntary and statutory sectors as appropriate.
  • To assist with the development of training and education or acute hospital staff and mental health staff.
  • The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of a high quality, cost effective service to his/her patients in line with the Trust’s key strategic objectives. This will involve a close working relationship with consultant colleagues, both within mental health and the acute hospital. The newly appointed consultant will be expected to participate actively and positively in the development of the Trust’s mental health services and should expect their pattern of work to change during the course of their employment within the Trust.
  • The postholder will work as a member of a team of highly motivated and dedicated psychiatrists and will be expected, in co-operation with other colleagues, to provide advice on planning, monitoring, resource allocation and service delivery to the Chief Executive and other senior managers within the Trust.
  • The postholder will participate in the consultant on-call rota.
  • The postholder will arrange mutual cover with his/her consultant colleagues working in the Adult Mental Health and Learning Disability Directorate.
  • The Trust is committed to delivering a person-centred, recovery-based metal health service. The active participation of service users and carers is fundamental to this objective. Successful candidates will be expected to facilitate such participation in the planning, delivery and monitoring of the service.
